The short answer
Start with the Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT Test, Eighth Edition, by ETS. McGraw Hill’s page says it was published on September 8, 2026 and reflects the January 2026 test. If you want more full-length practice in a book, Barron’s TOEFL iBT Premium, 19th Edition, says on its publisher page that it follows the 2026 format. Avoid anything printed before 2026. Then add timed practice, because a book can’t time you.

The books, and what each publisher saysLink to The books, and what each publisher says
We read every edition and date below on the publisher’s or ETS’s own page on October 28, 2026. Online shops often show different dates and page counts, so we use the publisher’s. Prices change and differ by country, so check the price where you live.
| Book | Covers the 2026 test? |
|---|---|
| Official Guide, Eighth Edition (ETS) | Yes, the publisher says so. Published September 8, 2026. |
| TOEFL iBT Premium, 19th Edition (Barron’s) | Yes, and it names the new tasks. Published July 7, 2026. |
| TOEFL iBT Premium Plus 2026 (Kaplan, eBook) | Unclear: “updated online”. Published November 18, 2025. |
| TOEFL iBT Prep, 19th Edition (Princeton Review) | Not confirmed: we couldn’t read the publisher’s page. |
| Official TOEFL iBT Tests, Volumes 1 and 2 (ETS) | Not shown as updated. We found no 2026 edition. |
- Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT Test, Eighth Edition (ETS). Two full-length practice tests, practice question sets, audio for the Listening and Speaking questions, answers with explanations, test-taking strategies and a Writer’s Handbook. McGraw Hill’s page says the test changed in January 2026 and the book reflects it, with print copies from $40. ETS’s own shop sells it as an eBook.
- TOEFL iBT Premium, 19th Edition (Barron’s, by Pamela J. Sharpe). Ten full-length model tests, including a diagnostic test, with adaptive Reading and Listening practice and online audio. The publisher’s page says it is aligned with the format introduced in January 2026, and it names the new tasks: missing-letter completion, sentence construction, email writing, academic discussion posts, Listen and Repeat and interview tasks. It’s 540 pages, listed at $44.99.
- TOEFL iBT Premium Plus 2026 (Kaplan, eBook). The publisher’s page lists it as published on November 18, 2025, two months before the test changed. It says the product is “now updated online” for the most recent test change and offers four online practice tests. The page doesn’t say which changes, so use the checks in the next section before you buy.
- Princeton Review, 19th Edition. We couldn’t read the publisher’s page for this one, so we won’t say whether it covers the 2026 test. Run the checks below on its cover and contents page.
- Official TOEFL iBT Tests, Volumes 1 and 2 (ETS). These books hold retired tests. ETS’s shop didn’t list them on October 28 and we found no 2026 edition, so treat any copy as a book for the old test.
The Official Guide as a PDF, the legal wayLink to The Official Guide as a PDF, the legal way
Plenty of people search for a free “Official Guide 2026 PDF”. You don’t need one. ETS’s shop sells the Eighth Edition as an eBook PDF, and its product page says to download the file within 180 days of buying it. That’s the real, current book, from the people who write the test.
We don’t link to free copies of current books. A free download is a copy the publisher didn’t approve, and you can’t tell whether it’s the right edition or whether pages are missing. Cheaper routes that are safe: borrow the print book from a library, or buy the eBook from ETS. ETS also says its official prep includes some free items, and our free practice tests don’t need an account to start.
How to spot an out-of-date book in a minuteLink to How to spot an out-of-date book in a minute
Open the book in a shop, a library or the “look inside” page of an online store, and check these things. Each one is something ETS changed in 2026.
| If the book shows… | It’s written for |
|---|---|
| A printing date before January 21, 2026 | The old test |
| Only a 0–120 score chart | The old test |
| Four Speaking tasks, with time to plan each answer | The old test |
| An Integrated essay: read, listen, then write | The old test |
| Score bands from 1 to 6 | The 2026 test |
| Speaking tasks called Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview | The 2026 test |
| Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Academic Discussion | The 2026 test |
| Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage | The 2026 test |
| Reading and Listening in two modules that adapt to you | The 2026 test |
An old book isn’t useless. Its grammar and vocabulary lessons, and its advice on taking notes, still help. This is our view, not ETS’s: use an old book for skills, and never use its practice tests to judge your band.
Check the book on your desk, step by stepLink to Check the book on your desk, step by step
- 1
Find the printing date
It’s on the copyright page, near the front. If it says 2025 or earlier, the book was printed before the test changed.
- 2
Turn to the Speaking chapter
You should find two kinds of question: repeating a sentence you hear, and answering an interviewer. If you find four tasks with reading passages, it’s the old test.
- 3
Find the score chart
A 2026 book shows the 1–6 bands. A chart of 0–120 only is the old way of reporting scores.
- 4
Decide what the book is for
A current book can give you practice. An old one can still teach grammar, vocabulary and note-taking, so keep it for skills.
Books can’t time you: pair one with timed practiceLink to Books can’t time you: pair one with timed practice
A book is good for learning how a task works and why an answer is right. It can’t run a clock, it can’t stop you replaying a recording, and it can’t make you speak your answer out loud into a microphone. ETS says each recording plays once on the real test, and sections are timed. This is our advice for covering the gap:
- 1
Learn a task from the book
Read the strategy for one task type, then try a few questions slowly, with no timer. Check each answer’s explanation.
- 2
Do the same task on a timer
Move to a timed, on-screen version of the same task. Notice how much faster the real pace feels.
- 3
Play each recording once
A book’s audio file lets you pause and replay. The real test doesn’t, so set yourself a rule: play it once, then answer.
- 4
Finish with a full sitting
In your last two weeks, do at least one full test, all four sections in a row with no breaks, so an hour and a half feels normal.
Try it
Try one on screen: a Read in Daily Life text
A short chat, three questions, and instant feedback. Notice how different it feels from reading a page in a book.
Hey! Are you still coming to the study group tonight?
Yes, but I’m running a bit late. My bus broke down.
No worries. We moved to room 214, since the library’s closed for cleaning.
Got it. Should I bring anything?
Just your notes from Tuesday’s lecture. Sam’s bringing snacks.
Perfect. See you around 7:30.
Question 1 of 3
Why does Maya send her first message?
B. To check that Leo is still coming tonight. Her first message asks whether he’s still coming. The room change and the notes come up later in the chat, so they’re details, not the reason she wrote.
Question 2 of 3
What does Maya mean when she writes “No worries”?
A. She is not upset that Leo will be late. “No worries” is an everyday way of saying “that’s fine”. She’s replying to Leo’s news that he’s running late.
Question 3 of 3
What can you infer about the study group?
A. It usually meets in the library. Maya says they “moved” to room 214 because the library is closed, which suggests the library is where they normally meet. Leo will arrive around 7:30, but he’s running late, so the group must start earlier.

ETS also sells timed practice. Its Readiness Pack pairs the Official Guide with one TOEFL Practice Online test, which ETS says copies the look, feel and timing of the real test. Our own practice tests are another way to add a timer, and the first test in every section is free.
Mistakes students make when buying TOEFL booksLink to Mistakes students make when buying TOEFL books
- Trusting the edition number alone. “Latest edition” on a shop page can mean latest before 2026. Check the printing date too.
- Buying five books. One current book plus regular timed practice beats five books read once. Pick one and finish it.
- Doing a book’s practice tests untimed, then judging your level. Untimed answers flatter you. Only count a test you took against the clock.
- Believing a book’s score estimate. A book can only estimate your band. Treat it as a rough guide, and check it with a timed full test.
- Hunting for a free PDF of a current book. A free file may be the wrong edition or have pages missing. ETS sells the real eBook, so there’s no need to risk it.
Common questions
What is the best TOEFL book for 2026?
The Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT Test, Eighth Edition, written by ETS, is the safest start: McGraw Hill says it reflects the test introduced in January 2026. Barron’s TOEFL iBT Premium, 19th Edition, is a good second book if you want more full-length practice.
Is there a 2026 edition of the TOEFL Official Guide?
Yes. The Eighth Edition is listed on McGraw Hill’s page as published on September 8, 2026, and ETS’s shop sells it as an eBook. Earlier editions came out before the January 2026 change.
Where can I get the TOEFL Official Guide as a PDF?
ETS’s shop sells the Eighth Edition as an eBook PDF. It must be downloaded within 180 days of purchase. We don’t link to free copies, since they’re copies the publisher hasn’t approved.
Can I still use an old TOEFL book?
For grammar, vocabulary and note-taking, yes. Don’t use its practice tests to judge your band, because they cover tasks the 2026 test no longer has, such as the old four-task Speaking section.
