Instantly convert between the 2026 band scale (1.0–6.0), CEFR levels (A1–C2) and the old 0–120 score. Or work out your overall band from your four section scores — free, no sign-up, and it updates as you type.

Since January 2026 the TOEFL iBT reports all three at once, and the old 0–120 total keeps being shown through the transition period — so most students end up needing to move between them.

TOEFL section scores: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking

Each section gets its own band from 1.0 to 6.0, and a band means the same CEFR level in every section: a 5.0 is C1 in Reading and in Speaking alike.

  • Reading

How well you understand written English, from everyday texts like notices and emails to academic passages. It’s adaptive: how you do in the first part decides the second.

Task types: Complete the Words · Read in Daily Life · Read an Academic Passage

    Practice Reading
  • Listening

How well you understand spoken English in short exchanges, campus conversations, announcements and academic talks. It’s adaptive too, and each recording plays once.

Task types: Listen and Choose a Response · Listen to a Conversation · Listen to an Announcement · Listen to an Academic Talk

    Practice Listening
  • Writing

How clearly you write: building correct sentences, then an email and a post for an academic discussion, all typed.

Task types: Build a Sentence · Write an Email · Write for an Academic Discussion

    Practice Writing
  • Speaking

How clearly you speak: repeating sentences you hear, then answering interview questions out loud, with no preparation time.

How your overall TOEFL band is calculated

Your overall band is the average of your four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band.

Example

Reading
4.5
Listening
4.5
Writing
4.0
Speaking
4.0

Average 4.25Overall band 4.5

An average exactly halfway between two half bands rounds up, as 4.25 does here. In ETS’s own examples, an average of 5.125 gives an overall 5.0, and 5.25 gives 5.5. On the old scale, the 0–120 total was the four section scores added up.

What is a good TOEFL score in 2026?

A good TOEFL score is the one your school or program asks for. There’s no pass mark: every band from 1.0 to 6.0 is a real result, and each school sets its own minimum.

Think in CEFR levels. ETS advises schools to first choose the CEFR level a program needs, then ask for the band that matches it. So it helps to know which level you’re aiming for: B2 is band 4.0–4.5, C1 is 5.0–5.5, and C2 is 6.0.

If your school still lists an old 0–120 score, ETS’s recommendation to schools maps the most common ones like this:

ETS’s recommended band for common old requirements. CEFR levels from the chart above.
Old requirement (0–120)Recommended bandCEFR
1005.0C1
904.5B2
804.0B2
703.5B1

Check the section scores too. ETS encourages schools to ask for the same band in every section, or to set a minimum for the skills a program relies on most. A strong overall band can still fall short if one section is low.

Until January 2028, your score report shows both scales: your CEFR level, your bands, and a comparable 0–120 score. So a requirement written either way can be checked against it.

Requirements differ between schools and programs, and they change. Always check your school’s own admissions page for the exact score and any section minimums.

TOEFL score FAQs

What is the highest TOEFL score?

6.0, the top of the 2026 band scale. It matches CEFR level C2 and compares with 114–120 on the old 0–120 scale. The lowest band is 1.0, and every section and the overall score use the same 1.0–6.0 range.

What TOEFL band is CEFR B2?

Band 4.0 or 4.5. On the same scale, B1 is 3.0 or 3.5, C1 is 5.0 or 5.5, and C2 is 6.0. This holds for every section as well as the overall band.

How is the overall TOEFL band rounded?

To the nearest half band. ETS’s own examples: an average of 5.25 becomes 5.5, and an average of 5.125 becomes 5.0. The calculator at the top of this page shows the average and the rounding as you move the sliders.

Is there a passing TOEFL score?

No. ETS sets no pass or fail mark. Each school or program chooses its own minimum, sometimes with a minimum for each section too, so check the admissions page of every program you apply to.

What is a good TOEFL score?

My school asks for a 0–120 score. What do I do?

Nothing needs converting. Until January 2028, your score report shows a comparable 0–120 score beside your bands, so you can check it against the school’s number directly. That score is the middle of your band’s range: a 4.5 comes with a 90.

Is my old TOEFL score still valid?

Yes, for two years from the test date, the same as any TOEFL score. Scores from before January 21, 2026 stay on the 0–120 scale; the tables on this page show the band each one compares with.

When do I get my TOEFL scores?

Your unofficial Reading and Listening scores appear on screen as soon as you finish the test. Your official scores arrive in your ETS account 3 days after your test date, and the PDF score report a day after that.

How can I find out my band before test day?

Take a timed practice test in the real format. Our Full Test runs all four sections in ETS’s order and gives you a band for each, plus your overall band, so you can see which section to work on. ETS doesn’t publish how it turns answers into bands, so a practice band is our best estimate.
