Say you test in the United States, where ETS’s list says US$280. Here’s what the same test can cost, depending on how you book. Replace US$280 with your own country’s fee and the extras stay the same.

The same test in the United States, before any tax
What you doWhat it addsYour total
Book 7 or more full days ahead and send scores to 4 schoolsNothing extraUS$280
…and you need to reschedule once+ US$69US$349
…and you add 2 more schools after the test (6 in all)+ 2 × US$29 = US$58US$407
…and you booked in the last 7 days, so ETS’s express fee applied+ US$49US$456
Fees from ETS’s registration fees page, checked November 2, 2026. At US$25 per extra report, as ETS’s score reports FAQ says, the last two totals would be US$399 and US$448. Tax, where ETS adds it, comes on top.

The same habits that cost US$176 extra here (US$456 minus US$280) cost the same in India or Japan, because the extras are flat US dollar amounts. On a lower test fee, they hurt even more.

Your test fee covers scores in your ETS account, a PDF of your score report, MyBest scores and up to 4 score reports sent to the schools you pick. ETS says you can add, delete or change those schools until 10 p.m., test center time, the day before your test. After that, each report sent costs a fee.

One more rule to know before you pay for a score review: ETS’s Bulletin says you can’t ask for one if you’ve already asked for your scores to be sent to an institution. Check how that applies to your free recipients before you decide.

Smart ways to pay lessLink to Smart ways to pay less

These are our advice, built on ETS’s figures. ETS doesn’t offer them as tips.

  • Book at least 7 full days ahead. That skips the US$49 express fee. ETS’s Bulletin says regular registration closes 7 full days before your test date. Our registration guide counts every deadline back from a test date.
  • Choose your 4 free schools before test day. Decide by 10 p.m. the evening before. A school you add later costs US$25–29.
  • Reschedule early, not at the last minute. ETS’s rule is at least 4 full days before. Rescheduling is US$69. Canceling and rebooking costs more, as the next section shows.
  • Practice before you book. A retake is a new registration, so plan to pay your country’s fee again. A full practice test first shows you your likely band before you spend money on a real one.
  • Match your name to your ID. ETS says that if the name or date of birth on your registration doesn’t match your ID, you can’t take the test and your fee isn’t refunded.

What students assume, and what ETS says
The mistakeWhat to do instead
“I’ll book the week before. It costs the same.”Within 7 days of the test date, ETS adds the US$49 express fee. Book at least 7 full days ahead.
“I’ll pick my schools after I see my score.”Only 4 schools are free, and only if you pick them before 10 p.m. the day before. After the test, each extra report is US$25–29.
“Canceling and rebooking is the same as rescheduling.”ETS refunds 50% if you cancel by the 4-day deadline, then you pay the full fee again. On US$280, that’s US$140 lost, against US$69 to reschedule. That’s our math from ETS’s numbers.
“If I cancel my scores, ETS refunds me.”No. Canceling scores gets no refund. You can reinstate them within 60 days for US$20.
“A cheaper voucher from a stranger is fine.”ETS says a test must be bought through your own ETS account, with a payment method or a voucher, and that in some countries vouchers come from an authorized third-party seller. Check with ETS that a seller is authorized before you pay anyone.

TOEFL discount codes, vouchers and refundsLink to TOEFL discount codes, vouchers and refunds

Is there a TOEFL discount code? Sometimes, but not one you can count on. ETS’s Payments FAQ says that from time to time, ETS or its affiliates may offer a promotional discount in a country or region, and to follow TOEFL on social media to hear about them. We found no standing code on ETS’s pages (checked November 2, 2026), so we don’t list any: a code on a coupon site may be expired, meant for another country, or fake.

  • Vouchers. ETS says that in some countries and regions you can buy a test voucher from an authorized third-party seller, and use it as payment when you register in your ETS account. Check with ETS that a seller is authorized before you pay.
  • Fee Reduction Service. For high school seniors in the United States with financial need who are applying to colleges where TOEFL scores are recommended or required. ETS says the voucher covers 50% of the regular test fee.
  • Refunds. Cancel at least 4 full days before your test date and ETS refunds 50% of the fee you paid, to the original payment method. After that, nothing. If ETS itself cancels a session, ETS’s Bulletin says your fees move to a new appointment or you can ask for a full refund.
  • How to pay. In your ETS account: card, e-check, PayPal or Alipay. In Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Togo, ETS’s Bulletin says only VISA cards are accepted.

The cheapest TOEFL is the one you only take once. A timed practice test shows your likely band in each section, so you can book a date you’re ready for.
